Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a direct challenge to the United States administration today, calling for an immediate end to threats regarding the annexation of Greenland and reaffirming the sovereignty of the Danish Kingdom.
The statement follows a series of escalations from Washington, including social media posts from U.S. administration affiliates suggesting an American takeover of the island was imminent, and subsequent corroboration from President Donald Trump citing “national security” and “mineral wealth.”

“Not For Sale”
In a formal statement released via the Danish government’s official channels, Prime Minister Frederiksen dismissed the notion of a transfer of sovereignty as nonsensical.
“It makes absolutely no sense to talk about the need for the United States to take over Greenland,” Frederiksen stated. “The US has no right to annex any of the three nations in the Danish kingdom. I would strongly urge the United States to stop the threats against a historically close ally and against another country and another people who have very clearly said that they are not for sale.”
Strategic Alliances and Security
Addressing the strategic arguments raised by the White House, the Prime Minister emphasized that Greenland’s security is already guaranteed under the NATO framework and existing bilateral agreements.
- NATO Commitment: Denmark and Greenland are integral members of NATO, covered by the alliance’s collective security guarantees.
- Defense Cooperation: A long-standing defense agreement already provides the United States with military access to Greenland.
- Arctic Investment: Denmark has recently increased its investment in Arctic security to meet evolving regional challenges.
Respect for Sovereignty
The Prime Minister’s remarks follow a weekend of heightened global tension following U.S. military operations in South America. The Danish Ambassador to the United States has also issued a formal “friendly reminder” to Washington that as allies, Denmark expects full respect for its territorial integrity.

Despite President Trump’s claims that Denmark “is not going to be able to” manage the region’s security, the Danish government remains firm. While Greenland maintains extensive self-government and its population holds aspirations for future independence, there is overwhelming domestic opposition to any form of American annexation.
The Prime Minister concluded by reminding the U.S. administration that the relationship between the two nations must be built on mutual respect rather than unilateral expansionist rhetoric.
