The 48-year-old, who first announced his retirement in July 2024 citing his body’s wear and tear, went out in an emotional submission loss to rising WWE star Gunther, who won the “Last Time Is Now” tournament to earn the honor of being Cena’s final opponent.
The defeat was historic, as it marked the first time Cena had been forced to tap out in over 20 years, bringing a symbolic end to his “Never Give Up” era. Cena, a record-breaking 17-time World Champion, was met with a thunderous standing ovation and took a final bow, saluting the audience as he left the ring for the last time as an active competitor.
While his in-ring career is over, Cena will remain a part of the WWE family, having signed a five-year deal to serve as a brand ambassador, focusing on mentorship and promoting the company globally.
