Maryam Nawaz Launches Pakistan’s First E-Taxi Scheme

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz formally inaugurated the country’s first-ever E-Taxi scheme in Lahore. The initiative aims to provide 1,100 electric vehicles in its first phase to create eco-friendly employment opportunities. To support the program, the Punjab government is providing a Rs 4 billion subsidy, covering 50% of the down payment and markup for male drivers and 60% for females. A significant 30% quota has been reserved for women, with their vehicles featuring a distinct color to enhance visibility and support.

The e-taxis are designed with modern safety and tech features, including panic buttons linked to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, in-car cameras, Wi-Fi, and digital payment ports. To ensure operational ease, the fleet will be integrated with ride-hailing platforms like inDrive and Yango, while fast-charging stations are being installed across the province. The Chief Minister highlighted that the scheme could enable drivers to earn up to Rs 200,000 monthly, significantly boosting household incomes.

During the ceremony, the CM also announced broader transport reforms, including the launch of a Green Bus Service in every tehsil and an upcoming trackless train project. Addressing the economic climate, she noted that inflation has begun to decline in 2026, with essential items like flour becoming more affordable. She reaffirmed her commitment to social welfare, noting that the Nigehban Programme continues to provide a safety net for millions of families across Punjab.
