President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia has issued a stern warning to the international community following Israel’s “unexpected and strange” formal recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland.
Speaking from Istanbul, President Mohamud characterized the move not as a diplomatic gesture, but as a “step of utmost danger” designed to facilitate high-stakes strategic objectives that threaten both Somali sovereignty and the future of the Palestinian people.

Allegations of Forced Displacement and Military Expansion
President Mohamud revealed that Somali intelligence has identified a three-point agreement between Israel and the Somaliland administration in exchange for recognition:
- Forced Resettlement: The displacement and resettlement of Palestinians from Gaza to the Horn of Africa.
- Military Presence: The establishment of an Israeli military base on the strategic coast of the Gulf of Aden.
- Normalisation: Somaliland’s formal accession to the Abraham Accords.
“Israel is attempting to export its problem in Gaza to our region,” President Mohamud stated. “This move opens a ‘box of evils’ and suggests that Israel has no peaceful intentions in coming to Somalia.”
Regional Stability and Security Concerns
The President emphasized that the recognition of a region that has sought secession for 34 years without international support is a violation of Somalia’s territorial integrity. He warned that such interference provides fertile ground for extremist groups like al-Shabab to exploit anti-Israel sentiment for recruitment.
“Al-Shabab has made Somalia weak, creating the vacuum that Israel is now trying to fill,” the President noted, while reaffirming his government’s commitment to internal stability through recent territorial gains and successful direct elections.

Global Condemnation
The Somali Presidency noted that Israel’s move has been met with near-universal condemnation, including a majority of the UN Security Council and regional powers such as Turkiye. President Mohamud praised the United States for maintaining its stance on Somali sovereignty and distancing itself from Israel’s unilateral decision.
Call for Unity
President Mohamud called upon the Arab and Muslim world to view this development as a “serious threat” to the stability of strategically important waterways in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. He urged the international community to uphold international law and respect the borders of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
