Trump Issues Executive Order Barring Transgender Women from 2028 Olympic Women’s Events

President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will prohibit transgender women from competing in women’s sports at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. During a briefing on March 13, 2026, the President revealed he had signed an executive order formally recognizing only two genders, male and female. He emphasized that this policy is intended to “keep men out of women’s sports” and serves as a formal notice to international sporting bodies that the U.S. will enforce these eligibility standards for competitions hosted on American soil.

The directive comes as organizers for the LA28 Games ramp up preparations for what is expected to be the largest Olympics in history. The schedule, finalized in late 2025, features 51 sports across 49 competitions, with events spread across 18 zones in Los Angeles and Oklahoma City. The Games are set to begin with the Opening Ceremony on July 14, 2028, and will conclude on July 30. LA28 CEO Reynold Hoover noted that ticket registration opened in January 2026, marking a critical phase for fans and athletes planning for the event.

This executive order sets the stage for a potential legal and diplomatic confrontation with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). While the IOC currently allows individual sports federations to determine their own eligibility criteria, a host nation’s government mandate to restrict participation based on gender identity marks a significant shift in Olympic protocol. The administration’s stance reinforces a broader domestic policy pivot regarding gender and athletics as the U.S. prepares to welcome the world’s elite athletes in just over two years.
