Pakistan is officially entering the 5G era, with services scheduled to roll out around Eid al-Fitr following the completion of all licensing preparations by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority. A high-profile ceremony is set to take place tomorrow at the Prime Minister’s House, where Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will formally issue licenses to the telecom companies that successfully secured the 5G spectrum. Key government figures, including IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, are expected to attend this landmark event. Each participating telecom firm has already submitted bank guarantees of $15 million to fulfill the final regulatory requirements, signaling that technical preparations for the next-generation network are complete.

The initial rollout will focus on Islamabad and other major metropolitan hubs, with services launching in selected high-traffic areas before expanding nationwide. Under the new license conditions, each provider is mandated to install 1,000 new telecom sites, including a requirement for at least 200 sites in remote or low-coverage regions to ensure balanced digital growth. The recent spectrum auction, which saw the sale of 480 MHz of bandwidth, is projected to generate approximately $510 million in revenue for the national treasury. This transition to 5G is expected to significantly boost mobile network performance, fostering innovation in Pakistan’s growing digital economy and providing faster connectivity for millions of users.
