Pakistan Urges Renewed Dialogue, and Full Peace Agreement Implementation to Stabilize South Sudan

Pakistan has called for immediate renewed political dialogue and complete implementation of existing peace accords to restore stability in South Sudan, emphasizing the Security Council’s pivotal role in fostering sustainable peace.

Permanent Representative Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad made the appeal during a UN Security Council briefing on the situation in South Sudan, underscoring the urgent need for political commitment amid ongoing humanitarian and security challenges.

“Renewed political dialogue and full implementation of the peace agreement are essential to break the cycle of violence and displacement,” Ambassador Ahmad stated. He highlighted the international community’s responsibility to provide robust support, including resources for peacekeeping operations and addressing acute humanitarian needs affecting millions.

Pakistan, a consistent contributor to UN peacekeeping with over 600 troops serving in UNMISS (United Nations Mission in South Sudan), reaffirmed its dedication to the country’s unity and prosperity. Ambassador Ahmad stressed that external actors must prioritize inclusive processes to empower South Sudanese-led solutions.

The briefing comes as South Sudan grapples with inter-communal clashes, flooding, and food insecurity displacing over 2 million people. Pakistan urged all parties to honor the 2018 Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), including timely elections and security arrangements.

“Pakistan remains steadfast in supporting South Sudan’s journey toward peace, development, and self-reliance,” Ambassador Ahmad concluded, calling for enhanced UN-African Union partnerships to amplify regional efforts.
