PMD Clarifies Ethiopian Volcanic Ash Cloud Will Not Significantly Impact Southern Pakistan

Nov 26, 2025 | Global Affairs, Latest News

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has confirmed that the ash cloud emanating from the recent eruption of the Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia will have no significant impact on Pakistan’s coastal regions, including Karachi, and is expected to pass safely over the Arabian Sea.

The volcano, located in Ethiopia’s Afar region near the Eritrean border, erupted on Sunday, marking its first recorded activity in nearly 12,000 years. The eruption produced dense ash plumes reaching altitudes of up to 14 kilometres, with initial projections suggesting possible movement towards the Arabian Peninsula and parts of South Asia.

Speaking on the matter, PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazeer Zaighum stated that current meteorological projections indicate the ash cloud will primarily affect deep areas of the Arabian Sea, Oman, and the Mumbai Flight Information Region (FIR), and will not pose a direct threat to Karachi or other coastal cities of Pakistan.

“The ash cloud is expected to remain at an altitude of approximately 50,000 feet. While it was observed around 60 nautical miles south of Gwadar, necessary warnings have already been issued to the relevant authorities, and the situation is being continuously monitored,” the spokesperson said.

According to international monitoring agencies, including the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) and FlightRadar, the cloud is being carried by prevailing winds towards the Arabian Peninsula. Although interactive models show it may pass near southern Sindh, PMD has reiterated that no significant environmental or aviation disruption is anticipated within Pakistan’s territory.

Authorities remain vigilant and will continue to issue updates should the situation evolve.
