In a landmark move to modernize provincial security, the Punjab Home Department has officially announced the establishment of dedicated “Anti-Drone Units” across every district of the province. Approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the initiative marks a transition toward a “proactive and preemptive” security doctrine designed to neutralize emerging aerial threats from hostile actors and militant proxies.

Strategic Aerial Defense & Jamming Capabilities
The new units are designed to provide a comprehensive shield against unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs):
-
District-Level Command: Each unit will operate under the direct leadership of the respective District Police Officer (DPO), ensuring localized rapid response.
-
Neutralization Technology: The units will be equipped with advanced “Anti-Drone Systems” featuring specialized jammers capable of disabling and grounding drones operated by “miscreants or enemy elements.”
-
Surveillance Fleets: Each district will be provided with its own fleet of surveillance drones to monitor sensitive installations, public gatherings, and high-risk border areas.
The “Rudimentary Drone” Threat
The provincial crackdown follows recent escalations where Afghan Taliban forces and Fitna-al-Khawarij (TTP) militants reportedly utilized “rudimentary drones” to target infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
-
National Ban: A blanket ban remains in place across Pakistan on the flying of all private and commercial UAVs.
-
Section 144: In Punjab, Section 144 is strictly enforced, prohibiting all outdoor drone activity. The only exemptions are for small drones used in strictly indoor venues (halls/marquees) and official operations by law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

Modernizing Law Enforcement
According to the Home Department spokesperson, the decision addresses the urgent need for modern counter-terrorism tools. By increasing the police’s capacity for aerial surveillance, the government aims to maintain public order and safeguard citizens without solely reacting to incidents after they occur. This deployment is part of a broader provincial security overhaul that includes the installation of digital scanners at all entry and exit points of the province.
