State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Jameel Ahmad called upon businesses to prioritize investment in efficiency and innovation and actively seek out new markets, emphasizing that Pakistan must become a significant player in the modern global economy rather than operating on its margins.
Addressing the ‘Dialogue on the Economy,’ Mr. Ahmad delivered a stark warning that the country’s current economic growth model cannot sustain its rapidly growing population of 250 million people, stressing the urgent need to transition from short-term stabilization efforts to a durable, sustainable, and outward-looking growth model.

He noted that macroeconomic stability is now underpinned by coordinated monetary and fiscal policies, with the SBP anchoring decisions in eight-quarter projections to avoid the historical pitfalls of premature easing.
Mr. Ahmad highlighted qualitative improvements in external buffers, noting that the country’s foreign exchange reserves have risen nearly fivefold, from a critically low $2.9 billion to approximately $14.5 billion, primarily due to strategic foreign exchange purchases rather than debt-driven inflows.
He affirmed that inflation has fallen in line with SBP forecasts and is expected to remain within the 5-7% target band over the medium term.
The Governor stressed that while policymakers must address structural issues through long-term reforms, the onus is on the private sector to look outward, integrate into global value chains, and modernize production processes to compete globally, rather than focusing solely on short-term domestic profits at the expense of global relevance.
