Punjab to Deploy Anti-Drone Units in All Districts Amid Regional Tensions

The Punjab Home Department announced a major security escalation with the establishment of “anti-drone units” across every district in the province. The move, approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, shifts the provincial security strategy toward preemptive counter-terrorism. Under the leadership of District Police Officers (DPOs), these units will be equipped with specialized drone fleets for aerial surveillance and advanced anti-drone systems capable of disabling “enemy and miscreant” UAVs through high-powered jamming technology.

This urgent domestic security measure follows reports of “rudimentary drones” being utilized by Afghan Taliban forces to target various areas during the ongoing border conflict. To mitigate these unconventional threats, the government has already enforced a nationwide ban on all unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicles. In Punjab, a 30-day ban has been in effect since February 25, though exceptions remain for indoor events and law enforcement operations. Officials stated that these new units are essential to meet “modern-day counter-terrorism requirements” and maintain public safety as regional volatility grows.

The deployment of these units coincides with Section 144 being in force across the province, granting authorities broad powers to prevent gatherings and regulate movement. As the “broad wave” of regional strikes continues to influence border security, Punjab’s Home Department is prioritizing the technological upgrade of the police force to counter aerial incursions. This initiative marks a significant step in fortifying Pakistan’s internal defenses against evolving cross-border threats.
