Reddit Considers Biometric Verification to Combat AI “Slopfest”

In a move that has sparked intense debate among users, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced on Sunday, March 22, 2026, that the platform may soon experiment with Face ID, Touch ID, and passkey technology to verify human users. Speaking on the TBPN podcast, Huffman described biometric data as the “most lightweight way” to stem the tide of bots and AI-generated content, which currently accounts for an estimated 15% of posts on the site. To maintain the platform’s culture of anonymity, Huffman suggested using decentralized third-party providers, stating, “We don’t want to know your name, but we want to know that you’re a person.”

The proposal comes as “existential” bot threats reshape the social media landscape; recently, the revamped Digg was forced to pause operations due to a bot horde. Research from 2025 further highlighted the risk, showing AI bots successfully infiltrating subreddits like r/changemyview by impersonating specific human identities to influence public discourse. While Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian acknowledged that “something has got to be done” about the “AI slopfest,” he admitted skepticism regarding how to sell face-scanning to a community that historically prizes privacy. Many users have already reacted sharply to the news, with some labeling the move a potential “Reddit killer.”
