UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK – August 12, 2025 – During a high-level debate on maritime security at the UN Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, today called for the international body to reject the militarization of strategic waters and unchecked naval build-ups. He emphasized that the world’s oceans must remain zones of peace and cooperation, not arenas for asserting regional dominance through “muscle-flexing.”

Addressing the 15-member council, Ambassador Ahmad stressed that attempts to dominate maritime spaces or marginalize coastal states are counterproductive and must be rejected. “In some quarters,” he said, “the seas are seen not as a shared domain, but as a stage for asserting primacy.” While not naming any specific country, his remarks were widely interpreted as a reference to India’s growing naval presence and influence in the region.
As a coastal state located at the confluence of major sea lanes in the northern Arabian Sea, Pakistan places the highest importance on a secure and rules-based maritime domain. The ambassador highlighted that this is critical not only for Pakistan’s national security and economic resilience but also for regional connectivity, food security, and energy security. The debate, convened by Panama, provided a platform for member states to share their perspectives on promoting safe and secure maritime environments globally.
