The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has blocked the release of the critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated docudrama The Voice of Hind Rajab in India. Directed by Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, the film depicts the tragic death of five-year-old Hind Rajab during the Israel-Gaza war in early 2024. Despite winning the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival and receiving a record-breaking 23-minute standing ovation, the film has been deemed too diplomatically sensitive for Indian audiences.

According to reports, the distributor was informed that releasing the film could potentially “break up” the strengthening diplomatic ties between India and Israel. The film utilizes real-life audio recordings of Hind’s desperate distress calls to emergency services while she was trapped in a car surrounded by her deceased relatives. The ban has sparked fierce backlash online, with critics labeling the move as censorship and a significant departure from India’s historical stance on the Palestinian cause. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has increasingly pivoted toward a closer strategic partnership with Israel, a shift that analysts say is now directly impacting the country’s cultural and media landscape.
