Reddit’s ‘Most Human Place’ Faces an AI Identity Crisis

Reddit, once known as the internet’s “most human place,” is facing an identity crisis as AI-generated posts flood its communities, blurring the line between genuine conversation and machine-made mimicry.

A new Cornell and Northeastern University study based on interviews with 15 moderators from over 100 subreddits found that many view generative AI as a “triple threat” degrading content quality, eroding trust, and complicating moderation.

Volunteer moderators, already overworked, now spend hours identifying polished but hollow AI posts that “look human but feel empty.” Many describe AI writing as verbose, inaccurate, and emotionless, a subtle flood that drowns real dialogue.

While some see AI as a useful tool if used transparently, most communities are drawing strict lines to preserve authenticity.

The study concludes that Reddit’s future depends on its ability to protect human connection, the fragile thread that still makes online conversation feel real.
