In a massive breakthrough on January 5, 2026, Pakistan’s Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and intelligence agencies thwarted a catastrophic terror plot in Karachi. Following a weeks-long operation, authorities arrested three key suspects; Jalil Ahmed, Niaz Qadir, and Hamdan, and recovered over 2,000 kilograms of destructive explosives. The haul, stored in 30 drums and five gas cylinders, included a significant quantity of urea fertilizer, a chemical historically used to manufacture improvised explosive devices. To ensure safety, the volatile materials were transported to the Hub area and neutralized.

Investigations revealed the suspects used a rented safe house 40 kilometers from the city to store the materials, which were reportedly smuggled from Afghanistan through Balochistan. CTD officials stated the network is linked to the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and the Majeed Brigade, operating under the leadership of Bashir Zeb. Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar noted that while targets appeared to be civilian, the timely intervention prevented a repeat of high-profile tragedies like the 2024 airport attack.
Authorities are now pursuing local facilitators who provided logistical support for financial gain. In light of the safe house discovery, police have urged stricter vigilance during rental arrangements. While search operations continue for additional suspects, the government remains on high alert to protect Karachi’s critical commercial infrastructure and ports.
