Gun Battle Leaves Militants Dead
In the exchange of fire that followed, police said four militants were killed in a retaliatory operation. However, no group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault.
Dera Ismail Khan lies close to the former tribal region of Waziristan, long considered a stronghold of Islamist militant groups, particularly the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Security forces have carried out frequent operations in the area in an effort to curb militant activity.
Rising Wave of Violence
Pakistan has seen a sharp increase in militant attacks since the TTP ended its ceasefire with the government in late 2022. Security personnel have been frequent targets in recent months.
The latest attack comes just days after a deadly suicide bombing at a mosque in Islamabad killed more than 30 people, underlining the persistent threat posed by extremist groups. Authorities say operations against militants will continue as the government seeks to restore stability in affected regions.
