Trump to Visit China Amidst Trade and Geopolitical Tensions

May 11, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

In a move set to reignite discussions on trade imbalances and international security, President Donald Trump will embark on a state visit to China from May 13-15, 2024, at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. The visit, confirmed by the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Monday, comes after an earlier postponement attributed to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The highly anticipated trip marks President Trump’s first visit to China since 2017 and takes place against a backdrop of strained relations between Washington and Beijing. Key areas of contention include trade tariffs, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and the status of Taiwan.

Sources indicate that President Trump intends to address trade imbalances and push President Xi to take a firmer stance on Iran, a major oil supplier to China. China’s independent “teapot” refineries are significant consumers of discounted Iranian crude, making the issue a crucial point of discussion.

“This will be a visit of tremendous symbolic significance,” stated US Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly. “But of course, President Trump never travels for symbolism alone. The American people can expect the president to deliver more good deals on behalf of our country.”

The visit will feature traditional diplomatic protocol, including a tour of the Temple of Heaven and a state banquet. The White House emphasized that President Trump aims to achieve concrete progress on key issues during his time in Beijing.
