Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton, best known for her roles in Annie Hall, The Godfather, and Something’s Gotta Give, has died at age 79 in California, PEOPLE confirmed. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to her home early Saturday before she was taken to a nearby hospital. Her family requested privacy during “this moment of great sadness.”
Born in Los Angeles in 1946, Keaton rose from theater to become one of Hollywood’s most distinctive stars. Her breakthrough as Kay Adams in The Godfather (1972) and her collaboration with Woody Allen in Annie Hall (1977), which earned her an Oscar for Best Actress, made her a defining figure of 1970s cinema.
Keaton later starred in hits like Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club, and Book Club, admired for her quirky charm and androgynous fashion. She never married but adopted two children, Dexter and Duke, calling motherhood her “greatest joy.”
Her death marks the loss of a Hollywood original, an actress who blended vulnerability, wit, and individuality in a way no one else could.
