UN Human Rights Office Condemns U.S. Intervention in Venezuela

Jan 7, 2026 | Latest News

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) today issued a stark warning to the international community, declaring that the recent U.S. military intervention in Venezuela constitutes a grave violation of international law and threatens global security.

The statement follows a weekend operation by U.S. forces that resulted in the ousting of Nicolás Maduro. While a new interim administration has been sworn in, the UN Human Rights Office maintains that the method of transition undermines the core tenets of the United Nations Charter.

Undermining International Law

Chief spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani addressed reporters in Geneva, emphasizing that the operation violated the fundamental principle that states must refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any sovereign nation.

“The international community needs to come together with one voice to insist on that,” Shamdasani stated. “It sends a signal that the powerful can do whatever they like.”

Implications for Human Rights and Security

The OHCHR rejected the narrative that the military intervention serves as a victory for human rights. Instead, the Office warned of the following consequences:

  • Erosion of Global Security: The intervention damages the architecture of international security, making all nations—particularly smaller states—less safe.
  • Increased Militarization: The Office expressed concern that further militarization will exacerbate the existing human rights crisis rather than resolve it.
  • Threat to Self-Determination: The UN maintains that the political future of Venezuela must be determined exclusively by the Venezuelan people through established legal and democratic frameworks.

Call to Action

The OHCHR is calling on the world community to reaffirm its commitment to international law and the principle of non-intervention. The Office warned that allowing such actions to go unchallenged sets a dangerous precedent for global governance and the protection of human rights worldwide.

“Instability and further militarization will only make the human rights situation there worse,” Shamdasani concluded, urging a return to diplomatic and legal norms.
