A senior White House official confirmed today that the United States is preparing to withdraw its remaining military forces from Syria over the coming months. Transition in Syria
The decision to withdraw the approximately 1,000 remaining U.S. troops follows the 2024 transition in Damascus and the subsequent strengthening of diplomatic ties between the Trump administration and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
“The Syrian government has agreed to take the lead in combating terrorism within its borders,” the official stated, noting that the U.S. military presence “at scale” is no longer required following the successful degradation of Islamic State (IS) influence. This move follows the recent closure of the al-Tanf and al-Shaddadi bases and the historic visit of President Sharaa to the White House in November.
Despite the withdrawal, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to regional stability following recent meetings with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani. While the transition remains conditions-based, the administration continues to prioritize the elimination of IS remnants, as evidenced by the recent Operation Hawkeye Strike retaliatory raids.

Simultaneous with the Syria drawdown, the United States is significantly ramping up its naval and aerial presence near Iran. The strategic realignment includes:
- Carrier Strike Groups: BBC Verify has confirmed the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln, equipped with guided-missile destroyers and fighter jet squadrons, to the waters near Iran.
- Arrival of the USS Gerald R. Ford: The world’s largest warship is expected to enter the region within the next three weeks.
- Military Readiness: Senior national security officials indicate that President Trump has placed the military on high alert for potential strikes on Iran as early as this weekend, though a final executive decision is pending.
The White House maintains that these movements are a necessary response to evolving threats and intended to safeguard American interests in the Middle East.
