President Donald Trump dramatically escalated tensions in the Middle East, declaring on Truth Social that a “massive armada” is heading toward the Persian Gulf. Warning that “time is running out” for a new nuclear deal, Trump linked the military buildup to stalled negotiations and Iran’s recent internal turmoil. He compared the naval force, led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, to the fleet sent to Venezuela in 2025, stating it is “ready, willing, and able” to act with “speed and violence” if Tehran refuses to abandon its nuclear ambitions.

The warning follows a brutal crackdown on nationwide protests in Iran that began in late December 2025. Activist groups like HRANA report that over 6,300 people have been killed during the unrest, which was triggered by a collapsing currency. Trump previously threatened to intervene on behalf of protesters but has now shifted focus back to the nuclear threat, reminding Tehran of “Operation Midnight Hammer” the June 2025 U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, and vowing that a second attack would be “far worse.”

Tehran has responded with defiance, with its UN mission stating that while it is open to “dialogue based on mutual respect,” it will “respond like never before” if attacked. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed Trump’s “armada diplomacy” as ineffective, insisting that threats must be set aside before any table can be set. With the USS Abraham Lincoln now operating near the Gulf and oil prices hitting a four-month high of $68, the region remains on a knife-edge.
