Venezuela Mourns as Reported Death Toll from U.S. Raid Climbs to 100

Jan 9, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced that at least 100 people were killed during the U.S. military operation, codenamed Operation Absolute Resolve, that ousted President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores. While the U.S. government previously estimated the toll at approximately 75, Cabello’s update marks the first official figure provided by Caracas, alleging that many of Maduro’s security contingent were killed “in cold blood.” The fatalities include 23 identified Venezuelan soldiers and 32 Cuban military and intelligence personnel.

In the aftermath of the raid, which occurred on January 3, interim President Delcy Rodríguez declared a seven-day period of national mourning. On Wednesday, military honors were held in Caracas as families buried dozens of fallen soldiers. Amid the funerals, new details emerged regarding the condition of the captives; Cabello confirmed Maduro sustained a leg injury, while Cilia Flores suffered a head wound during the extraction. At their first court appearance in New York on January 5, Flores was seen with visible bandages and bruising, with her legal team reporting potential rib fractures and requesting an urgent medical evaluation.
