Meta officially began rolling out one of the most requested features in the history of its browser-based platform: native voice and video calling. Launched in 2015, WhatsApp Web has served as a “lite” companion for a decade, but until now, users were forced to download the desktop application or reach for their phones to place a call. The new update, currently rolling out to beta subscribers, finally bridges this functional gap, allowing users to initiate and answer calls directly from any modern browser.

In its initial phase, the feature supports one-to-one calls and includes a high-quality screen-sharing option for video sessions, a major boost for remote collaboration and tech support. True to its privacy-first model, all browser-based calls are secured with automatic end-to-end encryption via the Signal Protocol. While group calling is currently absent, Meta has confirmed that support for up to 32 participants and “Call Links” are already in active development.
This update is a game-changer for Linux users, who lack an official desktop app, and professionals working on shared or restricted devices. While access is currently limited to beta testers, a stable public release is expected across all regions by late March 2026.
