WHO Director-General Warns of Severe Health Crises Amid Middle East War

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a dire warning regarding the rapidly deteriorating public health situation in the Middle East as the regional conflict intensifies. Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted that the targeted destruction of petroleum and industrial facilities in Iran has led to significant environmental contamination. This damage is releasing hazardous pollutants into the environment, which threaten to contaminate essential resources like food, water, and air. The WHO chief specifically noted alarming reports of “oil-laden rain” falling in several parts of the country, a phenomenon that poses immediate and long-term health risks to vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses.

The crisis is also severely impacting the delivery of medical care across the region, particularly in Lebanon. Since the massive aerial campaign began on February 28, 2026, at least nine health workers have been killed while performing their duties. The WHO emphasized that attacks on healthcare infrastructure and personnel are creating massive gaps in emergency services at a time when they are most needed. Beyond the immediate threat of violence, the organization is concerned that the combination of environmental toxins and a crippled healthcare system could lead to outbreaks of disease and a sharp rise in respiratory and skin conditions. The global health body is calling for the immediate protection of medical facilities and a cessation of strikes on critical civilian infrastructure to prevent a total humanitarian collapse.
