Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi Meets Chinese Counterpart Wang Yi

May 6, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in Beijing on Wednesday, as tensions escalate between Iran and the United States over the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting took place ahead of US President Donald Trump’s scheduled visit to Beijing on May 14 and 15 for a summit with President Xi Jinping.

During the meeting, Araghchi emphasized the strong ties between Iran and China, stating that bilateral cooperation would strengthen under the current circumstances. He affirmed Iran’s commitment to protecting its legitimate rights and interests in negotiations, seeking a fair and comprehensive agreement to end the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Wang Yi called for the swift reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the need for a complete cessation of fighting and the importance of continued negotiations.

This visit marks Araghchi’s first trip to China since the beginning of the war on February 28. Al Jazeera’s Katrina Yu reported from Beijing that Iran aimed to convey its position on the war, reaffirm its relationship with China, and secure ongoing economic and diplomatic support.

The meeting provided an opportunity for Iran to express its appreciation for China’s efforts to end the war and to seek a fair agreement with the US. China, while critical of the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, has expressed increasing frustration with Tehran’s continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier in Washington, DC, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Beijing to press Iran to lift its control over the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime exit from the Gulf.

Ma Xiaolin, dean at the Institute for International Studies on the Mediterranean Rim at Zhejiang International Studies University, suggested that Iran may be seeking China’s mediation in talks with the US. He noted the difficult position of both countries and the potential for China to play a role in facilitating a peace agreement, as well as enhancing Iran’s Belt and Road relationship with China, particularly in energy and oil supply.

Araghchi’s visit coincided with Trump’s announcement of a suspension of a US military operation to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, following mediation efforts led by Pakistan.
