Apple has officially discontinued its Clips app, quietly ending support for the short-form video editing tool it first launched in 2017. The app, once marketed as Apple’s creative answer to Snapchat and Instagram Stories, allowed users to merge photos and videos with filters, music, and text overlays, all within a simple, social-friendly interface.
According to Apple’s updated support page, Clips is no longer available for new users to download as of October 10, 2025, though existing users can continue using it on current iOS and iPadOS versions or re-download it from their accounts.

However, Apple warns that without future updates, compatibility issues may arise, and it encourages users to save their videos to the Photos app to avoid data loss.
Initially praised for its accessibility and clean design, Clips never gained major traction. TechCrunch’s Brian Heater noted early on that its editing tools were “simple to a fault,” while later updates mostly focused on minor improvements and AR effects.
The app’s quiet retirement comes as user-created video shifts toward AI-generated platforms like OpenAI’s Sora, which recently surpassed 1 million downloads, reflecting a broader move away from manual video editing toward AI-assisted creativity.
