Beijing Warns Tokyo After Election Victory and Taiwan Remarks

Feb 10, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China issued a stern warning to Tokyo on Monday, stating that any “reckless actions” regarding regional security would be met with a resolute response. The escalation follows the landslide election victory of Japan’s new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, a leader known for her firm stance on China and previous comments regarding military intervention in Taiwan.

Strained Diplomatic Foundations

Tensions between the two economic giants have intensified following remarks made by Takaichi suggesting that Tokyo could intervene militarily should an attack occur on Taiwan. Beijing, which maintains that Taiwan is an inseparable part of its territory, has characterized these comments as a direct provocation and a violation of the political foundation of China-Japan relations.

Official Statement from the Foreign Ministry

During a regular news conference in Beijing, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lin Jian urged the Japanese administration to distance itself from “far-right forces” and prioritize regional stability.

“If the far-right forces in Japan misjudge the situation and act recklessly, they will inevitably face resistance from the Japanese people and a resolute response from the international community,” Spokesman Lin Jian stated.

The Ministry further demanded a formal retraction of Takaichi’s previous statements: “We once again urge the Japanese side to retract the erroneous remarks made by Takaichi regarding Taiwan and demonstrate basic sincerity in safeguarding the political foundation of China-Japan relations through concrete actions.”

Regional Implications

The landslide victory of Takaichi is viewed by analysts as a shift toward a more assertive Japanese defense policy. Beijing’s “resolute response” rhetoric signals a potential cooling of bilateral trade and diplomatic exchanges if the new Japanese administration continues its current trajectory regarding the Taiwan Strait.
