A mass shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, on the evening of Saturday, December 13, left two students dead and nine other individuals wounded, eight of whom were critically injured students.
The attack, which occurred inside a classroom in the Barus & Holley engineering building during final exams, triggered an hours-long manhunt involving hundreds of local and federal law enforcement officers across the campus and surrounding city. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed the tragedy, expressing grief a week and a half before Christmas.

Although the initial manhunt was unsuccessful, authorities confirmed early Sunday morning that a person of interest, a male in his 30s, had been taken into custody at a hotel about 20 miles away, and they were not seeking any other suspects. Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez stated that the arrest was aided by the recovery of a firearm with a “unique characteristic” found with the suspect.

The incident, which saw the Ivy League campus placed under a strict shelter-in-place order, has been widely described by university President Christina Paxson as “the day one hopes never happens,” underscoring the ongoing national crisis of gun violence in the US. The University subsequently cancelled all remaining classes and final assessments for the fall semester.
