Amid soaring regional tensions, China and Russia conducted their 10th joint strategic air patrol around Japan and South Korea, prompting both nations to scramble fighter jets to monitor the eight-hour-long operation.
The Japanese Defense Ministry reported that two Russian Tu-95 nuclear-capable bombers rendezvoused with two Chinese H-6 bombers in the East China Sea, flying a “long-distance joint flight” that included a round-trip passage between Japan’s Okinawa and Miyako islands, a critical geopolitical waterway known as the Miyako Strait.

Japan’s Defense Minister, Shinjiro Koizumi, condemned the military activities as a “clear show of force” and a “serious concern” for national security, especially as this patrol closely followed an incident where Chinese fighter jets reportedly aimed fire-control radar at Japanese aircraft.

South Korea also deployed fighter jets after seven Russian and two Chinese military aircraft entered its Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ). This exercise, which is part of an expanding annual cooperation plan between Beijing and Moscow, directly challenges the established security framework in the Asia-Pacific region and is widely seen as a strategic signal of defiance against Japan’s recent firm stance on the defense of Taiwan.
