The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) released a harrowing report confirming that 2025 was the deadliest year for the press since record-keeping began in 1992. A record 129 journalists and media workers were killed globally, marking the second consecutive year of unprecedented fatalities. According to the report, Israel was responsible for two-thirds of these deaths, with the vast majority being Palestinian journalists in Gaza. The CPJ noted that the Israeli military has now conducted more targeted killings of the press than any other military in history.

The report also highlighted a disturbing technological trend: the rise of drone-assisted killings. Out of the total deaths, 39 journalists were killed by drones, including 28 by Israeli forces in Gaza, five by paramilitary forces in Sudan, and four by the Russian military in Ukraine. CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg warned that these attacks represent a “full-scale assault” on global freedoms, emphasizing that over three-quarters of the fatalities occurred in conflict zones where access to information is most critical.
Beyond active war zones, a culture of impunity continues to fuel violence against the press. Targeted murders were recorded in Mexico, India, and the Philippines, where investigations remain stagnant. The report also cited the execution of Saudi columnist Turki al-Jasser after years of detention. To combat this crisis, the CPJ is calling for radical international reforms, including the establishment of a global investigative task force and targeted sanctions against perpetrators of press violence.
