85 Seconds to Midnight: Doomsday Clock Hits Darkest Milestone Yet

On January 27, 2026, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the hands of the Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds to midnight, the closest the symbolic countdown has ever been to global annihilation. This update moves the clock four seconds forward from its 2025 setting of 89 seconds. Scientists warned that humanity is entering a “terminal phase” of international diplomacy, citing a “winner-takes-all” competition between the United States, Russia, and China that has essentially dismantled the global safety net.

The primary driver for this shift is the looming collapse of the New START Treaty, the final nuclear arms agreement between the U.S. and Russia, which is set to expire on February 5, 2026. Without a replacement, experts fear an unregulated, three-way nuclear arms race. The assessment also cited “catastrophic risks” from 2025 conflicts, including the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, ongoing border clashes between India and Pakistan, and the integration of artificial intelligence into military command systems, which dramatically shortens the time leaders have to prevent accidental war.

In a pointed critique, the Bulletin’s CEO Alexandra Bell noted that President Donald Trump has “declared war on renewable energy,” gutting national climate efforts just as the world surpassed 400 ppm of atmospheric CO2. While the report acknowledged record growth in solar and wind power, it concluded that these gains are being outpaced by “Orwellian” governance and biological security threats. The message is a final “prod” for the public to demand accountability before the clock, which can still be turned back through diplomacy, strikes midnight.
