Indonesia Bans Social Media for Children Under 16

Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, announced a landmark government regulation banning children under the age of 16 from using high-risk social media platforms. The sweeping new law, signed on Friday, will officially prevent minors from holding accounts on major digital services, including YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, Bigo Live, and the popular gaming platform Roblox. The government stated that the implementation of this ban will begin gradually starting March 28, 2026.

Minister Hafid emphasized that the regulation is a direct response to growing concerns over online safety and the mental health of the nation’s youth. By restricting access to these platforms, the Indonesian government aims to empower parents in the “fight back” against digital dangers such as cyberbullying, predatory behavior, and exposure to inappropriate content. This move follows a global trend of tightening digital age restrictions, though Indonesia’s inclusion of gaming platforms like Roblox marks a significant expansion of what is considered a “high-risk” digital environment.

The announcement comes amidst a period of intense regional and global digital scrutiny. Tech giants operating in Indonesia will now be required to implement stricter age-verification protocols to comply with the new mandate. Failure to adhere to these regulations could result in significant penalties for the platforms involved. As the March 28 deadline approaches, the Indonesian government plans to launch public awareness campaigns to help families transition to the new digital landscape.
