Jakarta said the move was necessary to maintain “public order and national security,” citing its long-standing policy of not engaging with Israel until it recognizes Palestinian statehood. The decision came amid ongoing violence in Gaza, which has fueled strong public sentiment across Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation.
The IOC responded by freezing discussions on Indonesia’s potential Olympic hosting bid, including the 2036 Games, unless guarantees are given that all athletes will be treated equally.
Indonesian Sports Minister Erick Thohir said the government “understands the consequences” but stood by the decision, emphasizing that national security and constitutional principles take precedence over international pressure.
