Interim Government Announces National Mourning Following the Death of Uprising Leader Sharif Osman Hadi

Dec 19, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

The Interim Government of Bangladesh confirms with profound sorrow the passing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent leader of the 2024 uprising and a senior figure of the student protest group Inqilab Mancha. Mr. Hadi, 32, succumbed to injuries today at a medical facility in Singapore, where he had been airlifted for emergency treatment following a targeted assassination attempt in Dhaka last week.

In a televised address to the nation, Chief Adviser and Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and the people of Bangladesh.

“The demise of Sharif Osman Hadi is an irreparable loss for the nation,” said Professor Yunus. “The country’s march toward democracy cannot be halted through fear, terror, or bloodshed. This was a premeditated attack by a powerful network intended to derail our upcoming elections and sabotage the democratic process. We will not allow the conspirators to succeed.”

In honor of Mr. Hadi’s sacrifice and contributions to the democratic movement, the government has announced the following:

  • Special Prayers: To be held at mosques across the country following today’s Friday prayers.
  • Day of Mourning: A half-day of national mourning will be observed on Saturday, December 20, 2025.
  • Repatriation: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working closely with Singaporean authorities to facilitate the repatriation of Mr. Hadi’s body to Dhaka.

Bangladesh Police have launched a massive manhunt for the masked attackers who shot Mr. Hadi as he left a mosque in the capital. The government has authorized a reward of five million taka (approx. $42,000) for information leading to the arrest of the suspects.

Despite this tragic event and the rising tensions in the lead-up to the February 12, 2026, parliamentary polls, the Interim Government reaffirms its commitment to holding free, fair, and inclusive elections. The referendum on the landmark democratic reform package will proceed as scheduled on the same day.
