“Diplomacy Betrayed”: Iran Slams U.S. for Strikes During Nuclear Talks

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei delivered a scathing condemnation of the United States following a massive joint U.S.-Israeli military operation against Iran. Baghaei stated that “diplomacy was betrayed by the Americans” for the second time in less than a year, referring to the fact that the strikes occurred while high-stakes nuclear negotiations were actively underway in Geneva. The spokesperson argued that the U.S. uses diplomacy as a “stalling tactic” and a cover for military buildup rather than a genuine path toward de-escalation.

The timing of the attack has drawn intense international scrutiny. Just 48 hours before the first bombs fell, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had expressed cautious optimism about reaching a “fair and balanced” nuclear deal. Baghaei’s comments highlight a perceived pattern of behavior, noting that a similar betrayal occurred during the “12-day war” in June 2025, when U.S. and Israeli forces struck Iranian nuclear sites while talks were ongoing. Tehran has now called for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council, labeling the operation a “flagrant act of aggression” that has effectively destroyed the possibility of a diplomatic resolution.

As the conflict intensifies, Baghaei reaffirmed that Iran’s armed forces would not hesitate to defend the homeland. He warned that any regional base used by the U.S. or Israel to launch attacks would be considered a legitimate target for the “sacred system of the Islamic Republic.” While European leaders have urged a return to the negotiating table, the Iranian Foreign Ministry maintains that Washington’s decision to abandon talks for force has opened a dangerous and unpredictable chapter for global security.
