On January 16, 2026, Iran’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Darzi, delivered a stark warning to the UN Security Council. Darzi stated that any military or political aggression toward Tehran would trigger a “full and decisive response,” citing Article 51 of the UN Charter on the right to self-defense. He accused the United States of “political hypocrisy” by calling the emergency meeting to discuss Iran’s internal unrest, labeling the move a direct interference in Iranian sovereignty.

The meeting highlighted a deepening global divide. While U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz warned that “all options are on the table” and that the level of repression in Iran has repercussions for international peace, China and Russia offered a strong defense of Tehran. The Russian envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, condemned the U.S. rhetoric as “extremely dangerous” and an incitement to overthrow a sovereign government, while China’s representative urged Washington to abandon its “fixation on the use of force.”

The diplomatic clash follows an extraordinary week of escalation. On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a final 25% tariff on any country “doing business” with Iran, a move targeting key trade partners like China, India, and Turkey. This economic pressure coincides with a catastrophic death toll at home; while Tehran acknowledges “security sacrifices,” the Human Rights Activists News Agency reports that fatalities have reached 2,615 since protests erupted on December 28. With a near-total internet blackout still in effect, the UN has called for an independent investigation into reports of mass killings as both sides prepare for further confrontation.
