Istanbul Security Talks Stall: Pakistan Demands Action, Not Excuses, On TTP Sanctuaries

Two days of critical security talks between Pakistan and the interim Afghan government in Istanbul ended in a stalemate, with the Afghan Taliban delegation reluctant to commit to verifiable action against terrorist groups operating from their territory, primarily the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Held under the eye of Qatari and Turkish mediators, the negotiations hit a major snag when Afghan representatives failed to provide the concrete, written assurances demanded by Pakistan.

Pakistan stood firm on its non-negotiable demand: the Taliban regime must eliminate cross-border terrorism.

  • Evidence is Clear: Pakistani officials backed their position with extensive photographic and documentary evidence showing the existence and movements of TTP and other militant leadership inside Afghanistan.
  • No Talks with TTP: Islamabad categorically refused the Afghan delegation’s suggestion to bring the TTP to the table for direct negotiation. Pakistan reiterated that the responsibility for ending the patronage of these terrorists lies solely with the Afghan authorities.

The seriousness of the situation was compounded by simultaneous reports of major infiltration attempts into Kurram and North Waziristan while the delegations were meeting.

Pakistani security officials cautioned that the Afghan delegation’s perceived lack of mandate and “illogical” responses raised serious doubts about Kabul’s intentions. Islamabad has made it clear that continued inaction will carry a price, and that any further progress depends entirely on the Afghan Taliban’s willingness to act decisively to secure the border.
