Following the month-long conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and Gwadar have emerged as vital alternative hubs for international trade. On Friday, March 27, 2026, data revealed that Karachi Port handled 8,313 containers in the last 24 days alone surpassing the total volume of 8,300 containers processed during the entire 2025 calendar year.

The surge is largely driven by global logistics operators seeking safe harbors outside the volatile Gulf region. To accommodate this demand, the Pakistani government recently revised transshipment regulations, allowing for more flexible cargo handling across both seaports and airports. Infrastructure improvements under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) have also played a crucial role in managing this sudden influx. Currently, the South Asia Pakistan Terminal is leading operations, having processed over 5,200 containers during this record-breaking period, effectively positioning Pakistan as a primary regional logistics center.
