Pakistan and China Strengthen Security Ties with New Protection Unit

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with Chinese Ambassador Jiang Zedong at the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad on Friday, March 27, 2026, to finalize a comprehensive security and counter-terrorism framework. The high-level meeting focused on protecting Chinese interests in Pakistan amidst ongoing regional volatility. A key outcome of the discussion is the establishment of a Special Protection Unit (SPU) specifically designed to safeguard foreign nationals, with a primary focus on Chinese citizens residing in the capital. In a unique move to bridge the communication gap, SPU officials will undergo mandatory Chinese language training as part of their specialized instruction.

To address the security concerns of international investors, the two officials decided to launch a two-phase business conference. The first phase will engage the Chinese business community already operating within Pakistan, while the second will target potential new investors. This diplomatic push follows a series of meetings earlier this week, including a session between Ambassador Jiang and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, where Pakistan’s role in regional de-escalation was emphasized. These measures aim to stabilize the investment climate as the “Police Exchange Programme” and broader security cooperation between Islamabad and Beijing reach new levels of integration.
