Incident Overview
At approximately 1:20 p.m. on Tuesday, the RCMP responded to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, located roughly 670 kilometers north of Vancouver. Upon entering the facility, law enforcement discovered six deceased individuals and the body of the suspect, who is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A seventh victim tragically succumbed to injuries while being transported to the hospital. In a related discovery, two additional victims were found deceased at a nearby residence. Authorities believe these incidents are connected, though the investigation remains in its early stages.
Emergency Response and Evacuation
The swift intervention of local law enforcement has been credited with preventing further loss of life.
- Evacuation: Approximately 160 to 175 students and staff were successfully evacuated from the school.
- Medical Care: Two individuals were airlifted to regional trauma centers with serious injuries, while roughly 25 others were treated for varying degrees of non-life-threatening wounds.
- School Safety: Students described barricading classroom doors with tables until tactical units arrived to lead them to safety.
Investigation and Suspect Identity
While a prior emergency “shelter-in-place” alert described the suspect as a female with brown hair wearing a dress, the RCMP has officially referred to the suspect as a “gunperson” pending formal identification. While social media reports have circulated a potential name, authorities have not confirmed these details and are urging the public to avoid speculation. The motive for the attack is currently unknown.
Leadership and Community Support
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his devastation, stating the entire nation mourns with the families of Tumbler Ridge. British Columbia Premier David Eby praised the first responders, noting that their rapid arrival ensured the tragedy was not significantly worse.
Counseling services and mental health support have been deployed to the community to assist students, staff, and families affected by this senseless act of violence.
