Labubu Toy Manufacturer Accused of Serious Labour Violations

A disturbing report from China Labour Watch (CLW) exposed alleged worker exploitation at Shunjia Toys, a primary supplier for the global toy giant Pop Mart. The factory, located in Jiangxi province, is responsible for producing the viral “Labubu” dolls. According to the investigation, which involved 51 in-person interviews, the factory’s 4,500 workers were subjected to “inhumane” conditions to meet the soaring global demand for the furry collectibles.

The most severe allegations include forcing employees to work over 100 hours of overtime per month, nearly triple China’s legal limit of 36 hours. Workers reported being pressured into signing blank employment contracts and being denied basic rights like paid sick leave. While no illegal child labour was found, the report highlighted that 16- and 17-year-olds were employed as long-term workers without the special legal protections required for minors, such as reduced workloads or safety training.

Pop Mart, which saw its international sales skyrocket by over 1,200% last year, stated it is “deeply concerned” and has launched an internal investigation. The company emphasized that it conducts annual third-party audits, but CLW argues these current oversight mechanisms are failing to protect workers on the front lines. The NGO has called for Pop Mart to compensate affected workers immediately and establish an independent grievance hotline.
