North Korea Missile Test Precedes Trump Asia Trip

Oct 29, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

North Korea conducted a significant military exercise, test-firing several sea-to-surface cruise missiles into its western waters, according to state media reports on Wednesday. The launch, which took place in the Yellow Sea just hours before US President Donald Trump was set to commence his visit to South Korea for the APEC summit, immediately heightened regional tensions.

The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) confirmed that the missiles successfully flew for over two hours, accurately striking their designated targets. The test was overseen by top military official Pak Jong Chon, who declared the move was aimed at assessing the “reliability of different strategic offensive means and impress their abilities upon the enemies.” Pak emphasized that the “important successes” contribute to developing North Korea’s “nuclear forces” as a vital war deterrent.

In response, South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff confirmed the detection of the launch and stated that the US-South Korea alliance is analyzing the weapons while maintaining a combined defense readiness capable of a “dominant response” against any North Korean provocation.

The timing of the test is widely viewed as a deliberate geopolitical signal, serving as a powerful backdrop to President Trump’s itinerary, which includes a summit with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and a crucial meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Though President Trump had previously expressed interest in a direct meeting with Kim Jong Un, officials have indicated that such talks are unlikely, particularly as Pyongyang remains resistant to engaging in dialogue without concessions regarding its nuclear weapons program. Prior to arriving in Seoul, President Trump met with relatives of Japanese abductees in Tokyo, reinforcing US support for finding their loved ones.
