Speaking at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Seoul, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence regarding forthcoming trade negotiations, telling a room full of CEOs that he believes the United States and China are “going to have a deal,” which he expects will be “a good deal for both” nations.
The highly anticipated discussions are set to commence on Thursday when President Trump meets with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in an effort to de-escalate the ongoing trade war.
President Trump’s arrival was marked by a lavish welcoming ceremony hosted by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, who awarded Trump the nation’s highest honor, the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, in recognition of his “contribution to peace on the Korean peninsula.”
The diplomatic agenda is complex, with President Lee Jae Myung under pressure to finalize a bilateral trade deal with the US. Adding to the regional volatility, North Korea test-fired missiles just prior to the summit. While President Trump expressed initial interest in meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, he later stated that scheduling conflicts prevented the meeting.
The summit highlights the intersection of critical trade discussions and persistent geopolitical tensions in East Asia, with the world watching the outcome of the US-China trade talks.
