Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has expressed optimism about the possibility of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, highlighting Pakistan’s potential to be a major beneficiary of such a settlement.
In a recent interview, Minister Asif emphasized that a secure border with Iran would be the “biggest benefit” for Pakistan. He noted the historical, geographical, and religious ties between the two nations, adding that Pakistan has successfully maintained a balanced relationship with Iran.
Pakistan has played a key role in mediating between the US and Iran, leading to a proposal aimed at de-escalating the conflict. Minister Asif stated that Pakistan had diplomatically convinced the US to agree to a ceasefire aimed at restoring peace in the region.
If sanctions are lifted following a deal with Iran, Pakistan anticipates being able to directly import essential commodities like gas and oil through land routes, reducing its reliance on international markets.
Minister Asif also attributed Pakistan’s strengthened position to its victory against India a year ago. He stated that this victory had boosted national confidence and established Pakistan as a credible negotiator on the global stage.
While acknowledging that challenges remain, Minister Asif expressed confidence in the country’s security and the capabilities of its armed forces. He added that Pakistan is committed to resolving issues through diplomatic engagement and is ready to respond to any aggression.
Minister Asif also addressed concerns about India’s alleged proxy warfare against Pakistan through Afghanistan, emphasizing the importance of securing the western border and fostering stronger relations with Afghanistan. He concluded by stating that Pakistan’s strong relationship with Iran secures its 1,100-kilometer border.
