Israeli Air Strikes Intensify in Southern Lebanon, Casualties Mount Despite Ceasefire

In a distressing turn of events, southern Lebanon has witnessed a surge in Israeli air raids, resulting in numerous casualties and escalating tensions despite an existing ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.

Lebanese state-run media reports that at least 20 lives have been lost in the recent attacks, including a dedicated civil defense rescuer. The Lebanese Health Ministry confirmed that an Israeli airstrike in Toura, Tyre district, claimed the lives of four individuals, including two women, and left eight others injured. Rescue operations are underway as teams search for a missing girl believed to be buried beneath the rubble.

Tragically, Lebanese Red Cross teams have also recovered the bodies of two young men who had been missing since Thursday, following Israeli air strikes on the town of Blat in the Marjayoun district. Raids have also been reported in Nabatieh, Bint Jbeil, and Sidon, with several fatalities reported across various towns and villages.

An Israeli army drone targeted a car in the Hasbaya district, resulting in the death of a civil defense member, according to the General Directorate of Civil Defence. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reports that 50 lives have been lost in the past 24 hours due to Israeli strikes.

The Israeli army’s Arabic-language spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, announced new forced evacuation orders for residents of Nmairiyeh, Tayr Felsay, Hallousiyyeh, Upper Hallousiyyeh, Toura, and Maarakeh in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah has retaliated with attacks on Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, citing Israeli violations of the ceasefire. These attacks included missile launches at a military base in northern Israel and targeting an army vehicle in Deir Siryan, as well as Israeli troops on the road to Adshit al-Qusayr.

Al Jazeera’s Obaida Hitto, reporting from Tyre, noted a significant escalation in military activity, with air strikes and artillery strikes occurring throughout the day along the coast.

The Lebanese Health Ministry reports a staggering 2,759 deaths and 8,512 injuries since hostilities began on March 2.

Negotiations on the Horizon

Despite the ongoing violence, a second round of negotiations between Israel and Lebanon is scheduled to take place in Washington on May 14 and 15. The US Department of State will mediate the talks, aiming to establish a framework for lasting peace and security, restore Lebanese sovereignty, delineate borders, and facilitate humanitarian relief and reconstruction.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met with veteran diplomat Simon Karam, who will lead the delegation to Washington. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam emphasized Beirut’s commitment to solidifying the ceasefire and addressing issues such as halting attacks, releasing prisoners, and establishing a timetable for withdrawal.

Salam also reiterated the government’s commitment to restricting weapons to the state alone, a comment that reflects the complex issue of Hezbollah’s military power.

Internal Divisions

Lebanon remains deeply divided on the issue of negotiations with Israel, with Hezbollah and its supporters favoring indirect talks, while the Lebanese government faces pressure to engage in direct negotiations.

Pressure on the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah is exacerbating internal tensions in a country still recovering from a 15-year civil war. Hezbollah is seeking to regain leverage lost in November 2024 after Israel caused severe damage and killed its leader, Hassan Nasrallah.
