Over 6,000 Acres of Punjab Forests Destroyed by Fires in Three Years

Punjab’s forests are burning at an alarming rate, with more than 6,000 acres of woodland lost to fires over the past three years, according to official records.

Data shows 268 forest fire incidents occurred in Punjab alone, making up nearly 40% of all 479 cases reported nationwide. Across Pakistan, wildfires have ravaged 15,497 acres of forest land since 2023.

The crisis peaked in 2024, when 165 fires scorched over 3,300 acres in Punjab, a dramatic rise from just four cases the previous year. In 2025, nearly 2,700 acres have already been burned in 97 separate incidents.

Other provinces have also suffered: Balochistan lost over 4,600 acres this year, Sindh reported 63 acres destroyed, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa saw 1,235 acres lost in 2024.

Experts blame climate change, deforestation, and poor fire management. They urge authorities to invest in early detection systems, public awareness, and forest restoration to protect Pakistan’s rapidly vanishing green cover.
