Iran Warns Neighbours Over U.S. Bases as Regional Tensions Rise

Jan 15, 2026 | Global Affairs, War & Conflict

Rising Tensions in the Middle East

Tensions in the Middle East are growing after Iran warned neighbouring countries that host U.S. military bases that they could be targeted if Washington launches an attack. A senior Iranian official said the message was meant to deter any U.S. intervention, as former President Donald Trump has publicly voiced support for protesters challenging Iran’s leadership. The warning highlights Iran’s concern that unrest at home could lead to foreign involvement, something Tehran views as a serious threat to its security and sovereignty.

U.S. Bases on Alert

According to three diplomats, some personnel have been advised to leave the main U.S. air base in the region. However, there are no signs of a full-scale evacuation like the one seen before Iran’s missile strikes on U.S. targets last year. Officials stress that the moves appear precautionary rather than a signal of immediate conflict.

An Israeli assessment suggests that U.S. intervention is possible, but the timing and scale remain unclear, adding to uncertainty across the region.

Iran’s Grip on Security

A Western official said Iran’s security forces remain firmly in control despite weeks of protests. While demonstrations have spread across the country, the state apparatus continues to function, and authorities have not shown signs of losing their hold on power.

Rights groups, however, warn of harsh measures. One organization said a man is scheduled to be executed on Wednesday, raising concerns about the government’s response to dissent.

Protests Test Authorities

The ongoing protests represent the biggest challenge to Iran’s leadership in years. While the government insists it can manage the situation, regional and global powers are watching closely, aware that any misstep could trigger wider instability in an already volatile region.
