Inside the Rage Machine: Whistleblowers Expose Social Media Safety Risks

Whistleblowers from Meta and TikTok have provided a chilling look inside an “algorithm arms race” where engagement is allegedly prioritized over user safety. According to internal documents and testimony from former employees, both platforms knowingly allowed harmful content to proliferate to compete for user attention. At Meta, senior management reportedly encouraged the amplification of “borderline” content material that is legal but toxic, such as conspiracy theories and misogyny, to bolster sagging stock prices.

Research shared by former staff revealed that Instagram Reels, launched to rival TikTok, suffered from significantly higher rates of bullying, hate speech, and incitement to violence than the platform’s traditional feeds. Despite these known risks, Meta allegedly allocated 700 staff members to grow Reels while repeatedly denying requests for more safety specialists to protect children.

Similarly, a TikTok whistleblower revealed that the company’s internal systems prioritized the complaints of politicians over urgent safety reports involving minors. In one disturbing instance, a report regarding a political figure being mocked was ranked as a higher priority than a case of sexual blackmail involving a 16-year-old girl. This strategy is reportedly aimed at maintaining favorable relationships with governments to avoid potential bans. Engineers further described the recommendation algorithms as a “black box” that prioritizes engagement numbers over human wellbeing, a process that young users say has led to radicalization and the normalization of extremist views. While both Meta and TikTok deny these claims, the testimonies suggest a systemic choice to feed users “digital fast-food” regardless of the long-term societal costs.
