Phone Call Highlights Growing Tensions
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has told US President Donald Trump that it would be “wrong” to impose tariffs on allies over opposition to a US takeover of Greenland, in a rare public rebuke of Washington from London. The two leaders spoke by phone on Sunday, marking their first conversation since Trump announced plans to introduce a 10 percent tariff on goods from eight European countries, including the UK, with the rate set to rise to 25 percent if no agreement is reached. The proposal has heightened tensions across Europe and caused concern among people living in Greenland.

UK and Europe Stand With Denmark
Downing Street stated that Sir Keir emphasized that security in the Arctic is a shared responsibility among all NATO members and should not be used as justification for trade penalties. He repeated the UK’s position that Greenland’s future must be decided by its own people and by Denmark.
Ahead of the call, Starmer spoke with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, underlining a coordinated European response. Denmark has insisted that Greenland is not for sale, while Greenland’s leaders have said they would rather remain Danish than become American.

Trump’s tariff threat has drawn criticism from across the UK’s political spectrum and from European allies. The eight countries named in the plan issued a joint statement warning that the proposed levies risk undermining transatlantic relations and could trigger a damaging escalation.
While Trump argues that Greenland is vital to US national security due to its strategic location and natural resources, critics say using tariffs against NATO allies could weaken the alliance itself. Starmer’s firm message to Trump reflects growing European resistance to Washington’s approach and a clear show of solidarity with Denmark and Greenland.
